Review Process

This document outlines 3 steps in the review process of the manuscript. These are:

1. Associate Editor initial
evaluation of manuscript and assignment of reviewer(s). An e-mail will be sent to you for each new manuscript assigned to you. Once you receive an e-mail, please go to the journal’s “Manuscript Central” website and log in. If you do not have log-in information, then please contact Molly Stasko at mstasko@peds.bsd.uchicago.edu Upon log in, you will be directed to the “Main Menu” dashboard Click on “ |

U This will take you to the Editor Dashboard, click on “Awaiting Reviewer Selection”
|
|
|
|
U Next to each manuscript assigned to you, there is a “View submission” link, click on it to view the manuscript. The manuscript will be downloaded in a PDF file for your initial review. U Now you have an idea what the manuscript is about and therefore can choose reviewers.
|

|
|
U On the same page you selected “view submission” from, click on the arrow button in the “Take Action” column to assign manuscript to reviewers.

U Manuscript Information page will appear, |
|
|
|
U Scroll down to “Advanced Search” and choose “Reviewer” from the “Roles” box.
|
|
|
|
U Then scroll further down to click the “search” button.
|
|
|
|
U A list of all reviewers will appear.
|
|
|
|
U Check the box under the “Add” column of all reviewers you choose for this manuscript
|
|
|
|
U Then scroll down and click the “save” button.
|
|
|
|
U A new page will appear showing the reviewer(s) you selected.
|
|
|
|
U Now click on the assign button next to the reviewer you chose, this will open a new “e-mail” window to notify the reviewer of his/her task.
|
|
|
|
U Click the “save and send” button this will send the e-mail to the reviewer.
|
|
|
|
U This will complete your initial involvement with the manuscript. The reviewer(s) will now be notified of their task. Once they are done with the review process (see below), you will receive an e-mail notifying you to view their review reports so that you can then prepare and submit your review and notify the Editor-in-Chief. The 2 sections below shows how the reviewer complets their task and how you then complete the final part of manuscript review. hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh |

2. Review of manuscript by
reviewer(s). |

U Reviewers will receive an e-mail requesting them to review a manuscript. They should log-in to manuscript central (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/pedcard) Manuscript assigned to them will be listed, click “view manuscript”

U This will show information about the manuscript, view the manuscript either as an HTML or a PDF file.
|
|
|
|
U After reading the manuscript, prepare your review report. To provide feed back to editor, click on “score sheet” tab
|
|
|
|
U This will take you to the score sheet page where you would be able to recommend the manuscript to be accepted, accepted subject to revision or rejected.
|
|
|
|
U It may be best to type the review report in a Microsoft Word document, then attached as a file. You can also provide feed back to editor in the free text provided. It may be best NOT to use the “comments to author” free text space, since your review report will be made available to the author, and typing entire report again this space will create duplicity.

|
U After attaching your review report, click the submit button. The editor who assigned you this manuscript to review will be notified that the review process was completed. hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh |

When the manuscript review process is completed by
the reviewer, you will receive an e-mail notification.
Log onto manuscript central (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/pedcard)
and click on “
|

U This will take you to a page listing all manuscripts with complete reviews. Your task now is to complete the review process for each of these manuscripts and submit to Editor-in-Chief. |

U First click on the “Take Action” button in front of a particular manuscript.
|
|
|
|
U This will take you to a page detailing information of the manuscript. You will note in the right hand column the name of the reviewer (Ra-id Abdulla), their recommendation (accept in this case). You can review their recommendations by clicking on “view review”
|

|
U This will open a new window showing reviewer’s recommendations, comments to editor, comments to the author and a review file attached. Click the file attached, this will open it in a new window.
|

|
|
U After reviewing what the reviewer(s) recommended and read their report, go back to the previous page which details information of the manuscript and make your own recommendations, you may agree with recommendations made by the reviewer or make your own recommendations.
|

|
U At this point, you can just write your comments to the editor and click one of the options (accept, accept with revision or reject) as you see fit. If you would like to add to the reviewers’ comments or combine 2 reviewers’ reports, then you can copy part or all of their comments and place in a new Microsoft Word document and attach.

|
U After attaching a file it will appear on the page.
|
|
|
|
U The only thing left is to click the “submit” button; this will generate an e-mail to the Editor-in-Chief. Your job is now complete. |
|
To Add a New Reviewer U To add a new reviewer, go to the page where reviewer search is performed. In the left hand column there is a box which allows you to add a new reviewer. Enter all required information, then click "Create and Add" This will add this reviewer to the list and could be used again in the future.
