Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship ProgramThe pediatric Cardiology Fellowship at The University of Chicago is a 3-year program accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education/Residency Review Committee. Physicians joining the training program are graduates of pediatric residency training programs that are certified or eligible by the American Board of Pediatrics. The rich clinical and academic reserve at The University of Chicago allows excellent standards of education at our center. It is our goal to train fellows to become excellent pediatric cardiologists, yet not to be overwhelmed by excessive work. Unlike many other programs, we have put in place a well structured didactic teaching process. Fellows start their training with a 2-day inception course aimed at teaching the practical aspects of pediatric cardiology. Throughout the year, one hour didactic sessions are held four times a week to provide fellows with extensive knowledge of the various aspects of our field. Lecture Schedule The application process starts in October, 18 months prior to the start of
the fellowship. Interested applicants can download
the application from this site. Please send all application material to Program
Director: Ra-id
Abdulla, MD (rabdulla@uchicago.edu).
Three recommendation letters are also required; these must be sent directly to: Ra-id Abdulla, MD 773-702-6172 (Phone) Due to a large number of applicants, we are unable to interview all those who apply. Applicants invited for an interview are scheduled to visit our facilities during February, March and April, 14 months prior to the start of the fellowship. Call Responsibilities ResearchResearch in Pediatric Cardiology is conducted in the fields of interventioanl cardiology, electrophysiology, echocardiography and practice of cardiology. In addition basic science research is available in molecular pediatric cardiology, genetics and calcium channel receptors. Fellows spend 12 months in research over the course of their 3 year fellowship training, 10 months of those are on full time bases.

The Pediatric Cardiology Interventional Symposium, organized by Dr. Hijazi, is an annual international pediatric cardiology conference dedicated to the discipline of interventional cardiology in children. The site of the conference alternates between Chicago and other cities in the United States and abroad. In 2003 the conference was in Orlando, Florida, in 2004 in Chicago, and in 2005 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It will be held in Las Vegas in 2006. The conference is unique in that attendees witness live satellite transmissions from catheterization laboratories and operating rooms of notable medical centers around the world. In these live sessions, experts demonstrate interventional procedures on patients while the audience watches and has the opportunity to discuss with the operators the procedure performed. |
