Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program

The pediatric Cardiology Fellowship at The University of Chicago is a 3-year program accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education/Residency Review Committee. Physicians joining the training program are graduates of pediatric residency training programs that are certified or eligible by the American Board of Pediatrics.

The rich clinical and academic reserve at The University of Chicago allows excellent standards of education at our center. It is our goal to train fellows to become excellent pediatric cardiologists, yet not to be overwhelmed by excessive work. Unlike many other programs, we have put in place a well structured didactic teaching process. Fellows start their training with a 2-day inception course aimed at teaching the practical aspects of pediatric cardiology. Throughout the year, one hour didactic sessions are held four times a week to provide fellows with extensive knowledge of the various aspects of our field.

Lecture Schedule
Monday 7-8 am: Congenital heart disease.
Tuesday 7-8 am: Diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization.
Wednesday 7-8 am: Echocardiography, theoretical and practical applications.

The application process starts in October, 18 months prior to the start of the fellowship. Interested applicants can download the application from this site. Please send all application material to Program Director: Ra-id Abdulla, MD (rabdulla@uchicago.edu).
A complete application includes the following:

Three recommendation letters are also required; these must be sent directly to:

Goals and Objectives of Fellowship Training

Unique Educational Features of Pediatric Cardiology at The University of Chicago

The section of Pediatric Cardiology at The University of Chicago houses two important and internationally renowned educational institutions.  One is the Pediatric cardiology Interventional Symposium (PICS) and Pediatric Cardiology journal.

Pediatric Cardiology Symposium

The Pediatric Cardiology Interventional Symposium, organized by Dr. Hijazi, is an annual international pediatric cardiology conference dedicated to the discipline of interventional cardiology in children. The site of the conference alternates between Chicago and other cities in the United States and abroad. In 2003 the conference was in Orlando, Florida, in 2004  in Chicago, and in 2005 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  It will be held in Las Vegas in 2006.

The conference is unique in that attendees witness live satellite transmissions from catheterization laboratories and operating rooms of notable medical centers around the world. In these live sessions, experts demonstrate interventional procedures on patients while the audience watches and has the opportunity to discuss with the operators the procedure performed.

Pediatric Cardiology journal

An international journal, Pediatric Cardiology, is dedicated to the discipline of heart diseases in children. This journal is edited by Dr. Ra-id Abdulla and is published by Springer-Verlag-New York. Manuscript submission and readership are worldwide.  Several of the faculty members are members of the journal's Editorial Board  and interested fellows participate in the review process and the editorial function of the journal. Previous fellows who demonstrated excellence in this process have joined the editorial board.

Fourth Year Fellowship

The University of Chicago offers two advanced training tracks in pediatric cardiology: Interventional Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Electrophysiology. This fellowship training is for one year and provides trainees with advanced and comprehensive education in the respective fields.

Fellows interested in the fourth year fellowship (PGY 7) in the fields of interventional pediatric cardiology or pediatric electrophysiology can apply 6-10 months prior to the start of the fellowship. The selection process is not performed through any match process.
